MisterWives

Mandy Lee is a name I have heard in the alternative scene since the formation of MisterWives in 2013. The band built its platform by touring with well-known bands like Twenty One Pilots and Paramore.

MisterWives front-woman, Amanda Lee Duffy — otherwise known as Mandy Lee — has one of the most distinct voices of any woman in the alternative scene. Her whimsical voice carries listeners through an otherwise emotional song, her voice masking the dark meaning of the lyrics.

I have friends that have tried getting me into MisterWives for a while, but only recently was I able to sit down and listen to the band. After the release of their new album “SUPERBLOOM,” I fell down a MisterWives hole and only listened to them for about a week straight.

There is just something about Mandy Lee’s voice that pulls me into her music. Her beautiful voice is complemented by the alt-pop instrumentals, which overall enhances the lyrics. The lyrics in MisterWives songs lean more towards the emotional side, especially on “SUPERBLOOM,” which has songs depicting the stories of Mandy Lee and drummer Etienne Bowler’s divorce.

My favorite MisterWives song is “Twisted Tongue.” Not only does it have a catchy beat with amazing vocals, but the message the song sends is empowering.

“Twisted Tongue” is about confronting a toxic person and unveiling their harmful ways. The song appears to be an anthem for rising above and growing as a person, while toxic people from your past may try to drag you down.

The chorus calls out this toxic person for being contradictory, specifically with the lines “You’re a weed, not a flower/ Just a pretty-faced coward.” Those lines are a direct call out to people that put on a kind-hearted facade to appear more likable.

It is a strong, straight-to-the-point message that most artists do not really address. Bands do write songs about toxic people, but the takeaway is usually one big “Screw you. I’m better than you.” With MisterWives, the message is all about being the bigger person and walking away.

Mandy Lee is not only a gifted singer, but she is also a lyrical mastermind that pours her heart and soul into every single one of her songs, making her an astonishing role model for aspiring musicians everywhere.
