May 5, 2016 - A junior anatomy student examines and identifies a part of the cat that is being dissected. Students in Robin Huggins’ anatomy class annually dissect cats as an end-of-the-year lab that lasts two weeks.

Starr’s Mill teachers await the beginning of the Honor’s Night ceremony in the Willie Duke Auditorium on May 2. At Honor’s Night, students are recognized for their academic and extracurricular achievements through the presentation of scholarships, special recognition awards and department awards.

Registration is just one of the many tasks counselors perform for students throughout the year, but because it is so time-consuming, it often results in students not being able to see their counselors to address other concerns.

April 12, 2016 - A drunk driver crashed her car into one of the Starr’s Mill signs near the bus loop on April 8. The sign, donated by a previous graduating class, and shrubbery took significant damage.

April 23, 2016- The graduating seniors of year 2016 pick up their senior signs on April 29. Each senior can buy a lawn poster with their name and graduating class to put on the front lawn of their house for $40. The posters are being picked up in the 300 hallway.

April 27, 2016- Chorus director John Odom and his seventh period jazz choir practice in the auditorium for their spring concert on May 3 from 6-9 p.m. This year’s concert will have senior student conductors, classical pieces, and music from “Aladdin” and “Little Shop of Horrors.”

April 23, 2016- Band teacher Scott King and jazz band stock up on water and other drinks to keep cool and hydrated during the Spring Sampler festival. The Mill’s band performed for the festival on April 23 at the Fred Amphitheater.

April 21, 2016- English teacher Ashley Collins prepares her seventh period class for the Ninth Grade Literature End of Course Milestone on the USA Test Prep website. All freshmen will take the Georgia Milestone on April 25 for English.

April 21, 2016- Colorguard tryouts were held in the cafeteria on April 21. The older color guard members who have been on the team for over two years helped eighth grade students from Rising Starr learn the routine for the tryouts to make next year’s team.

April 21, 2016- Band teacher Scott King and assistant band teacher Christopher Johns host a small pizza party in the band room to show appreciation to all the band students who performed for the soccer game against McIntosh on April 15. The girls soccer team scored a 3-2 win against the Chiefs at “The Battle of the Bubble.”

April 27, 2016- The administrators and the teachers who do not teach a class during seventh period help media specialist LeighAnne Hanie gather and check all the Chromebook carts before Georgia Milestone testing. This statewide standardized test will be completed by students on the Chromebooks for certain classes such as Biology, Economics or American Literature.

April 1, 2016- The spring sports 2016 pep rally was held in the school gym on April 1 where students of all classes sat together in the bleachers to watch and participate in an array of games and challenges. Students of all grades paid $1 to vote for a teacher they wanted to get pied in the face for the benefit of Student Government Association, and physics teacher Galin Crew won the votes.

Culinary arts student works the salad bar the week before spring break at “Salads and Spuds,” a faculty luncheon set up by nutrition and wellness teacher Cheryl Clower. Students gave a survey to 40 teachers to create the menu, and teachers spent $7 for their meal.

March 23, 2016 - A student from the National Honor Society enjoys blowing bubbles with the Special Olympics athletes in the Panther Stadium at the Olympic Village activity tent. The mission of the Fayette County Special Olympics is to provide sports training in several Olympic-type sports for people 8 years of age and older with intellectual disabilities, giving them opportunities to develop physical fitness and participate with other Special Olympic athletes and the community.

Feb. 6, 2016 - The Peers are Linking Students club pageant participants entertained the crowd with singing, dancing and playing the guitar during the talent portion. Present and past PALS students from all five Fayette County high schools participate in the pageant.

Feb. 11 - The creative writing classes sold Valentine’s Day carnations as a way to spread love and raise money for the “Musings” literary magazine. Unfortunately, these flowers die within a week and only serve as a superficial token of love.
