Player of the Week

Tim Monihan and Farmers Insurance recognize senior linebacker Josh Layton as the 15th Player of the Week for the fall sports season.

This season for football has been a year of flexibility for the team. With so many injured players, teammates have had to take on new roles. Though Layton plays linebacker, he has had to play more of an offensive role because of injuries.

“Josh had a great game for us,” head coach David Cooper said. “In the last couple of weeks, he’s moved into an offensive role. He started at linebacker for us a couple of years, that on top of what he’s doing for offense for us right now, filling voids with all of the injuries.”

Last week, Starr’s Mill defeated Northside, 36-6. During the game, Layton ran the ball 4 times for 6 yards and had 1 kick return for 3 yards.

“I was able to help the team on both sides of the ball,” Layton said. “Block[ing] for the runner backs on offense, [and I] made a lot of plays on defense.”

So far this season, Layton has had 21 carries for 87 net yards. His longest run of the season has been 14 yards. Layton has also had one interception and one fumble recovery.

Starr’s Mill is currently undefeated and has one game left. The Panthers play Jonesboro at 7:30 p.m. on October 31 in Tara Stadium.
