Earlier this week, both tennis teams hosted the first round of GHSA state playoffs. Both teams won 3-0 with the girls defeating Drew and the boys defeating Forest Park.
“Something I’ve noticed through the course of this season is that we have many kinds of leaders on this team,” assistant coach Katie Tucker said. “There’s not a single player on our team that I can’t think of a strength that they have that is tied to some form of leadership.”
This is the first year since 2018 that both Starr’s Mill teams have won the region, boosting the team’s confidence going into state playoffs. Sophomore Evelyn Terranova has played a significant role in reinforcing that confidence by boosting high morale with her performances in previous matches.
“If she won hers, then we would have won our matches for the day,” Tucker said. “She really brought it home when it mattered.”
Another crucial factor that set the teams up for success is the fluid communication on court, especially in the doubles matches.
“Doubles is difficult because you have to rely on a partner. You have to make good calls,” Tucker said. “They’ve been working on their communication this season and we saw that [Monday].”
Establishing that solid foundation of confidence and good communication enabled the teams to advance into the second round of state playoffs. Both teams host Blessed Trinity this afternoon.
