Boys tennis crushed the competition to advance to the state playoffs. The Panthers won both region tournament matches 3-0.
The team won the first round of matches against Northside. The boys who won their games were sophomore William Deslyper on line 3 singles, doubles players juniors Matthew Wysong and Alex Ruiz on line 1 doubles, and doubles players junior James Bender and freshman Kyle Williams on line 2 doubles.
In the second round, the team went up against Harris County with everyone going out and winning 3-0. The players who won this round included sophomore Brayden Nelson on line 1 singles, Deslyper on line 2 singles, and doubles players Wysong and Ruiz on line 1 doubles.
“You may be down, but you’re never out,” head coach Amy Evert said. “We wanted to make sure that they just realized even if they’re down, they just need to battle and dig deep a little harder.”
The team hosted the first round of state playoffs on April 21 and defeated Forest Park.
“I’d say with the new tennis courts the team is getting a lot better together at a faster rate than before,” Nelson said. “I think I’m just getting better overall.”
Starr’s Mill will host Blessed Trinity in the next round.
