With two wins in last week’s region tournament, the girls tennis team is moving on to the state playoffs. In their first match, they won 3-0 against Northside, and then won 3-1 against Central Carrollton in the second match.
“I love their dedication and sportsmanship,” head tennis coach Amy Evert said. “They get along well together, and they are really kind to their opponents.”
While the entire team did phenomenal as a whole, a few girls in particular stood out. Coach Evert identified junior Chloe Bearden who plays two singles, sophomore Evelyn Terranova who plays three singles, sophomore Emily Benson who play doubles one with her partner senior Madeline Allen, and Farmers Insurance Player of the Week junior Tatijana Taylor who plays line one singles as outstanding performers in last week’s matches.
In any sport, the end goal is always to win the game, but what really makes a team spectacular is possessing the ability to collaborate and communicate with each other. This team has no issues with working together.
“I think we all have a really good bond with each other,” Taylor said. “We are always able to make every situation fun and exciting.”
The level of collaboration between team members set them above their competitors, allowing them to achieve two consecutive wins and one shiny trophy. Coach Evert and Taylor agree that the most memorable part of the tourney trip was when the entire team rushed to receive their well earned trophy.
“To see the joy on their faces when they actually clenched the win was probably the best moment of the day,” Evert said.
Both varsity tennis teams will host the first round of state playoffs this afternoon. The girls host Drew starting at 3 p.m.
This is the first time in school history that Starr’s Mill tennis has hosted the playoffs on their own tennis courts.
