On Monday, Starr’s Mill varsity girls lacrosse lost a game against Wesleyan, 15-12. The Lady Panthers lost momentum in the last quarter due to the Wolves defense.
“I think we can really continue to work on ground balls and playing aggressive. We had a really great night tonight and had a lot of chances to take the lead,” head coach Tony Kluemper said. “They just got the calls their way for most of the game and it just ended up with a loss for us.”
The Lady Panthers scored the first goal in the game. Both teams went back and forth throughout the rest of the opening quarter. The teams ended the first quarter tied, 3-3.
During the second quarter, the Wolves scored the first goal with the Lady Panthers quickly following. Senior Abby Turnier scored the last two goals of the second quarter with less than 40 seconds left and seemingly regained momentum for Starr’s Mill. Turnier’s goals helped narrow the Wesleyan lead to 9-6.
During the third quarter, the Wolves kept scoring while the Lady Panthers struggled to keep pace. Starr’s Mill managed to score twice, while Wesleyan stretched the lead to 12-8.
“I think this was a really good game. We lost to them in the final four last year so this showed a lot for where our team is,” Turnier said. “We played really hard, so I think this really brought up our spirits going in for the rest of the season.”
During the last quarter, the Lady Panthers scored the first three goals, regaining their momentum. However, the game went more downhill from there due to the Wolves defense.
“I think we played well and it just was kind of an unfair game,” freshman June Williams said. “We got called for a lot of stuff that they did too and they didn’t really get called for.”
The Lady Panthers are 7-5 overall and 4-0 in the region. They travel to Lovett on April 3.
