With the team made up of all underclassmen and eighth graders, JV girls basketball is dominating the court as they remain undefeated.
The Lady Panthers defeated McIntosh High School last night, 51-3. A strong effort at both ends of the court, especially stout defense, contributed to the team’s eighth win of the season.
“The pressure [of taking over the court] is worrying about your defense at that moment,” sophomore Landry Hunter said. “But it’s really good to know that you’ve got good teammates around you just to make sure you’re playing a good game.”
Teamwork and communication seemed to be a major factor in the game. The girls were constantly talking and helping their teammates get into a scoring position.
The amount of communication has helped the Lady Panthers transition into different positions and line ups. These changes have been beneficial to their undefeated season.
“[To help develop the youth] we run very similar things to the varsity, so they are prepared for when they get up there,” head coach Peyton Dean said. “We run practices alongside them, and we let them know what’s coming.”
During this game, the Panthers came out hungry. At the end of the first quarter, the girls already led 15-1. After major efforts on both defense and offense, they led 43-3 going into the last quarter.
“We are hoping to keep the undefeated streak going so far,” Dean said. “We have 5 more games left, and a lot of back-to-back games coming up. It’s a lot of games in a short period of time, but just stay hungry and humble at the same time.”
In a day of cross-county hoops, all five Starr’s Mill basketball teams played at Whitewater on January 18. JV girls look to remain undefeated when they take the court against the Lady Wildcats at 12:30 p.m.
