Despite two completely different scenarios, both tennis teams cruised into the second round of the GHSA state playoffs.
Girls tennis defeated Westover, winning their first three matches and pulling the rest. Having won the region gave the team the luxury of hosting the first round. The leadership and experience showed in the opening round of the playoffs with their leaders winning their matches and not forcing a close game for some of the younger players.
“It’s super rewarding getting to see all of our hard work and effort pay off,” sophomore Alexa Walters said.
The girls host Wayne County on April 23 at 2 p.m. in the second round of the state playoffs.
Having finished third in the region left the boys team with a four-hour bus ride to Cairo for the first round of the playoffs. However, the boys took care of business repeating the performance of the girls team, winning the first three matches and then pulling the others.
“Cairo flat out wasn’t a very good team,” senior Oliver Wysong said. “I am looking forward to state because I feel like we will do pretty well.”
The boys travel again on April 22. This time the match will be against West Laurens starting at 3 p.m.
