For the third time this season, varsity girls soccer mercy-ruled their opponent. The Starr’s Mill offense overpowered Troup throughout the game, en route to a 10-0 win.
“It’s kind of a mental game,” head coach John Bowen said. “Can you make yourself work harder than you really have to?”
Sophomore Kendra Ivaska led the Lady Panthers with four goals. Freshman Avany Yeagar scored twice.
With the powerful offensive and defensive skills of the lady panthers, Troup didn’t even get a chance to score. Starr’s Mill had the main possession of the ball and would not let up.
“We pretty much show up every day ready to work. Everybody has just come in and there really isn’t any egos or anything,” Bowen said. ”It’s just let’s work hard, let’s get better, let’s do what we need to do.”
Within the first 15 minutes of the game Starr’s Mill was already up 6-0. Before the half ended the Lady Panthers scored two more goals, officially putting the mercy rule into play which shortened the half.
“I think it’s obviously important to work on things that we talk about in practice and whenever we go through our film,” center back Lilly Hillegas said. “I think whenever we go into our next game it just allows us to play to our advantage of what works.”
After the break, Starr’s Mill scored two more goals in 10 minutes, ending the game.
“At the end of the day it was three points, it was a shutout,” Bowen said. “We got everything we can need for the regions.”
Starr’s Mill is now 7-0-1 overall and 3-0 in region play.
Starr’s Mill hosts non-region opponent Columbus tonight at 6 p.m. The team plays three region games next week.
