For the first time in Starr’s Mill history, girls basketball added a freshman team. Due to injuries and changes in rosters, the team merged into JV at the end of the season.
“I wouldn’t say [the team went to the] backburner,” head coach Peyton Dean said. “We lost girls to injuries. With girls getting pulled up to varsity, we just combined the two teams.”
At the beginning of the season, there were a lot of girls wanting to try out, so the program wanted to give everyone a chance to play and build up the youth in the program.
However, Starr’s Mill was the only team in the region with a freshmen girls team. Many of the early season games were against the junior varsity teams of other schools.
The possibility of having another girls freshman team all depends on the amount of interest and the upcoming freshmen class.
The JV season has already ended, but the varsity girls team is preparing for the region tournament this week after defeating Whitewater 69-23. Starr’s Mill enters the region tournament in second place behind Fayette County High School.
