Panther softball triumphed over Riverdale on Senior Night, 12-0.
Starr’s Mill scored three runs in the first inning, four runs in the second inning, and five runs in the third inning before the game ended due to mercy rule.
“There are a lot of little things that came from these seniors, some girls play everyday, some girls don’t,” head coach Peyton Dean said. “Even with them not playing everyday they still find a way to lead.”
The seniors were recognized after the game, as they walked around the diamond high fiving, fist bumping, or hugging their teammates to say goodbye. As they walked around the diamond, the announcer read about them and what inspired them to do what they do, along with what lessons to give to help the younger players.
“I just told them to have fun all the time, and if someone is putting you down don’t listen,” senior Tyanna Smith said.
Starr’s Mill got a one-two-three top of the first to start the game. The Panthers scored three in the bottom of the first courtesy of several Raider errors.
In the bottom of the second, senior Hope Delaney tripled, followed by an inside-the-park homerun by fellow senior Tyanna Smith, increasing the lead to 5-0. Sophomore) Ella Bissonnette and freshman Kayla Peavyhouse would later score.
Starr’s Mill posted three more runs in the third to increase the lead to 12-0. After shutting down the Raiders in the top of the fourth, the game ended due to mercy rule.
“[We are] building off where we ended off this year and not starting over,” Dean said. “Get everyone playing in the offseason, and adding 8th graders next year.”
This was Starr’s Mill’s final game of the year and they ended the season 5-10 overall and 4-8 in the region. The Panthers will miss the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
