Tim Monihan and Farmers Insurance in Peachtree City have named sophomore golfer Luke Phillips as the sixth Player of the Week for the spring sports season. Following a streak of strong performances from both Phillips and the entire boys’ golf team, Starr’s Mill won the region tournament at Planterra Ridge this past weekend and began their road to the state tournament.

“It means a lot being selected for this award,” Phillips said. “It shows how much hard work I put into golf, and it’s nice for it to pay off.”

In his freshman year, Phillips was one of five male Panther golfers to participate in the team’s state championship victory.  This year, the team has high expectations to reach the same level.

“I expect the team to play well at state and I really want to win another championship,” Phillips said. “We are very young but also very talented and we have a lot of knowledge of the course state is being held at.”

In just his second season as a varsity golfer, Phillips has already improved his game to include both an intimidating presence off the tees as well as an automatic ball striker from close range.

“He is very long off the tee but his short game around the greens is where he really separates himself from the competition,” head coach Burt Waller said. “Luke is a consistent player who performs each outing.”

The boys’ state tournament will be held at Planterra Ridge Golf Course on May 21 and 22. The girls’ tournament will be on the same weekend at Braelinn Golf Course.
