For the first time since 2005, the boys’ track and field team, under head coach Chad Walker, won the Region 4-AAAAA championship Thursday, April 18.
Walker said he believes that the boys’ team won this year because of how balanced the team is in all events and the dedication that everyone on the team has.
“Everyone had their part to play,” Walker said. “We won because of the great coaches we have and how dedicated the kids are.”
For the sectionals meet Saturday from 10 a.m-6 p.m. at Panther Stadium, the boys’ team has 10 athletes who will be competing in seven events.
“I think the [region]meet went well for everyone,” senior Timmy Roberts said. “I am going to compete in the triple jump Saturday, and I think I have a chance of making it to state.”
Roberts will compete with his two brothers, senior Josh, who qualified in high jump, and freshman Daniel, who qualified in the triple jump and the 110 hurdles.
The girls’ team also had a fantastic meet, finishing third out of 11 teams.
“We have nine girls and a relay team who are going on to sectionals Saturday,” Walker said. “Many of them are underclassmen, which shows just how young the team is.”
Senior Nicole Chrzanowski, who qualified in both the mile and two-mile, said she is looking forward to racing again Saturday.
“I am ecstatic to be going on to sectionals, and ideally, state,” Chrzanowski said. “I am just kind of disappointed because it is the same day as prom.”
Walker said he is excited to see what happens Saturday at the sectional track meet and believes his athletes will continue improving like they have all season.
