Undefeated in Region 4 – AAAAA, members of the boys’ golf team are already polishing their clubs in preparation for the state tournament May 20, for the second consecutive year.
“I feel good about my season,” said junior Andrew Bourg, one of the team leaders. “All of our hard work has paid off.”
With a total of 310 strokes, the team won region play on April 26.
The state championship will be held at 14 golf courses throughout the state. The Panthers will travel to Glynn Academy’s home course at Jekyll Island. Spectators who wish to make the five-hour drive will be admitted free.
The boys were led by senior captain Chad Ring, who shot a 77 along with Jeffrey Davis. Senior Kile Williams and Bourg each shot a 78.
They along with Parker Langham and Frederick Port also qualified for state.
“This is our year to win it,” Ring said. “We have all of the good players, we just need to play well.”
Head golf coach Burt Waller said he is excited about their prospects.
“I look for the boys to finish in the top three with a good chance of winning it all if we play well,” Waller said.
The girls’ team didn’t qualify for state. Because of a leg injury, Captain junior Morgan Kory could not play.
“Alex Brown, Amber Soloman, and Mynah Holloway played well but couldn’t score well enough to overcome that Morgan was out with an injury,” Waller said.
