Senior Grant Aasen said he believes the key to the varstiy boys’ lacrosse team winning their final eight games is making fewer mistakes.
“We are playing more relaxed but still make occasional mental mistakes that can cost us the game,” Aasen said. “If we eliminate these mistakes, we will win more games.”
After winning 8-6 against St. Pius Wednesday, March 27, Schmidlkofer said the difference was his team’s execution.
“We started executing better, which led to us making fewer turnovers,” Schmidlkofer said. “This win definitely gave us some confidence back that we had been lacking.”
Senior Kevin Yoggy said he believes this game set a good basis for the rest of the season because of the momentum and confidence it gave the team.
Two nights before the St. Pius win, the Panthers led county-rival McIntosh (7-2) by three goals going into halftime but had difficulty scoring in the second half and were outscored 5-3, losing the game 11-9.
Schmidlkofer said he believes the difference between the two halves was the number of mistakes made.
“In the first half we played well, but we started having difficulties executing plays in the second, leading to a lack of goals.”
“We had McIntosh beat in the first half,” Aasen said. “Then we just started making too many mistakes and lost the game because of it.”
Despite the rain and wind on Saturday, March 23, the Panthers made the trip to Allatoona High School (7-0), who is ranked second in the state, and lost 10-2.
“We had to play some young guys because Kevin Yoggy was out with a concussion,” Schmidlkofer said. “This put us at a disadvantage against a good team, but our defense was solid and Nick Gossner played well in goal.”
The Panthers’ next home game is Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. for Senior Night against Woodward Academy.
