The Panthers took a 51-42 victory over Union Grove High School Monday night to secure a spot in the state basketball tournament. It will be the first time both the boys and girls basketball teams are in the state tournament.
Juniors Jeremiah Vrundy and David Watson scored 19 and 18 points respectively.
“We came out slow in the first half,” head coach Brandon Hutchins said, “but we played really well in the second.”
The Panthers will play tonight in the region championship hosted at Ola High School in Henry County against Creekside at 8:30 p.m. “We have beat them twice already, but they just keep getting better,” Hutchins said. “They will definitely give us all we want.”
With a win, they will play the winner of Whitewater and Northgate at 8:30 p.m. Friday night. The Panthers will have the opportunity to have a home game for the first round of the state AAAAA tournament if they win tonight.
It is the second time in school history that the boys’ basketball team has made it to the state tournament. “This is how success starts,” Hutchins said. “It sets the bar high for upcoming seasons.”
