Coach Brandon Hutchins felt “extremely nervous, but confident” in his team as the last 30 seconds ticked down and his Panthers were losing 43-42 on their home court Tuesday night to rival Whitewater.
The Panthers caught a break in the low-scoring game that saw several lead changes when Wildcat sophomore David Bowler snagged a pass that junior David Watson threw to senior Will Anda. The referee called a double dribble as Bowler rushed down the open court for a shot.
With 12 seconds left, Watson passed the ball in to Anda who dribbled to the post. Anda passed back to senior Matt Walsh who then swung the ball to junior Jeremiah Vrudny. Vrudny, who went up for the shot and missed got his own rebound and scored with one second left on the for the Panthers’ dramatic 44-43 win.
“Regardless of the last shot, I feel like I played poorly compared to the other games,” Vrudny said.
“We played good defensively, but we have to get our offense involved from the start of the game,” Anda said. Hutchins would agree. “I didn’t think we played to our full potential, but a win is a win.”
Anda led the team in scoring with 15 points and Vrudny was right behind him with 14. “It was by far my best game of the season,” Anda said. “We couldnt get our offense going and I just stepped up and did all I could to get us the win.”
