People often have a notion of romance and all of the supposedly wonderful feelings of falling in love. Yet what exactly does it feel like to be told these things without having ever been in love before? Icelandic singer-songwriter Laufey explores this feeling in “Everything I Know about Love” on her debut album.
Laufey delivers a bright and dynamic summary of what she has been told about love before ever having experienced it herself. The song describes what it is like being a hopeless romantic, expressing all of the remarkable things one hears about romance and falling in love before experiencing it.
“Everything I Know about Love” is the title track to Laufey’s first full length album, “Everything I Know about Love.” The album explores Laufey’s feelings as she navigates her move to Los Angeles, falling in love with a new city. Laufey’s songs are a more modern take on jazz, mixed with classical elements as the artist aims at modernizing jazz and reframing it for today’s audience.
Throughout the song, the lyrics are somewhat playful, as the song is slightly making fun of its writer through the lyrics. The line “When will someone prove to me / That this isn’t fantasy” shows how the things she describes in the song have only added to her anticipation and longing for the wonderful romances she constantly hears about.
Laufey combines new elements of modern pop with traditional sounds of jazz, taking inspiration from Ella Fitzgerald and Chet Baker. The song’s melodic intro is a classical piece composed by Bach, played by Laufey on the cello with her mother and sister accompanying the tune on the violin.
Laufey brought her modern take on jazz to mainstream audiences, rising to fame after she went viral on social media platforms with the release of her EP “Typical of Me.”
