When it comes to breakup songs, there are not many that lead from the villain’s perspective of the relationship. Munn’s 2023 indie-pop single “breaking hearts is getting old” takes on the view of the regretful “bad guy.”
The beginning of the song starts with Munn setting the tone using imagery such as, “rain rolls down the windows of the car I left you crying in.” The beat also starts to set in, building to the big moment of the song. The suspense is quickly muffled by the pre-chorus which provides the calm before the climax.
Munn does an amazing job of propelling the listener to look forward to the chorus. In it, he intensely lists off a variety of metaphors to describe his actions in the relationship, ending with his voice quieting as he sings, “breaking hearts is getting old.” This also finishes the song.
When he was 15, Munn started writing music. At the time, he did not imagine it would be his career. Everything changed in his sophomore year of college when his relationship ended abruptly.
Struggling to heal, Munn turned to music, writing his debut single “I Tried” in 2018. His gut-wrenching lyrics combined with his ability to take on hard topics set Munn apart from other sad pop artists.
It is important for everyone, including the people who messed up, to find closure by having a musical outlet, and Munn provides that.
