Senior Ella Griswold has been listening to “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens.
“I heard it in one of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies, and I really liked it,” Griswold said.
“Father and Son” has a melodic guitar beat which is relaxing as its backing track, but the main draw is the story it tells. That story is about a father and son talking past each other as the son is trying to break away and make his own life. A life his father does not understand.
The song was originally written for a musical, “Revolussia,” but the project fell through. “Father and Son” is the last remnant of the project, recontextualized as about the societal gap between generations. It was released in August 1970 and had an all-time high of 2nd place. It also placed 408 in a list of the top 500 songs for Rolling Stone.
Most may know the song from “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” during the funeral scene of Yondu as the original recording plays there.
“The relationship with the father and son is interesting,” Griswold said. ”I also like how it relates to the plot.”
“Father and Son” is available on all streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music.
