Drama teacher Cody Ward has been recently listening to “What I Was Born To Do” from the musical “Bring It On.”
“It’s a bop,” Ward said. “It’s a good opening number.”
“What I Was Born To Do” is about dreams and aspirations, as main character Campbell Davis, played by Taylor Louderman, hopes to bring her dream of leading a cheerleading squad to victory at the national competition. It uses a big ensemble to back the high energy number to hook listeners into its addictive pop-style soundtrack.
“Bring It On,” loosely based on the 2000 film of the same name, opened in the St. James Theatre on August 1, 2012, and closed on December 30 of the same year. “What I Was Born To Do” has over 11 million listens on Spotify.
The musical was written by Jeff Whitty, with music by Tom Kitt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and lyrics by Miranda and Amanda Green. Miranda also wrote music for “Hamilton, “Encanto,” and “In the Heights.”
“It’s kind of like her ‘I want’ song,” Ward said. “She talks about what she wants to do, how she wants to achieve these amazing things.”
“What I Was Born To Do” and the rest of “Bring It On” is available on all major streaming platforms.
