Sophomore Pi Fritschy has recently been listening to the Live at BBC Radio version of Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie.”
“All of her songs are full of meaning,” Fritschy said.
This song is based on celebrity makeup artist Valerie Star. Throughout the song it explains her relationship with Dave McCabe, how they met, and how she got arrested for driving with a suspended license.
The song is much like the rest of Amy Winehouse’s songs with a mix of pop, soul, and jazz all coming together to create this deep song. Verse one starts off with a strong jazz vibe and goes into the chorus with multiple backup singers following the same slow melody.
“Her voice live is so incredible,” Fritschy said. “It’s almost unbelievable that [her voice] sounds that good.”
Amy Winehouse was an American singer songwriter in the early 2000s with over 40 tracks released in her career and with 2 studio and 2 live albums. She is known for her ability to mix many different music genres like jazz, pop, soul, and R&B.
In her career, her most popular song was “Back to Black” and the title of her second and final studio album. “Valerie” was on her first studio album, “Version.”
You can listen to “Valerie” on all streaming platforms.
