World history and AP art history teacher Rebecca Rickeard has been listening to “Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor” by Matt Papa and Matt Boswell.
“It’s a beautiful song,” Rickeard said.
Throughout the four verses the storms, sin, doubt, and death we sometimes face are discussed. The idea that “Christ [is] the sure and steady anchor” is repeated again and again at the beginning of each verse emphasizing this love and belief in you. No matter what failure or defeat you may be going through, Christ will always stand by you.
The song feels like a timeless hymn by having a soft choir in the background and soft repeated words. But the artists put a modern twist on it by bringing in different instruments such as, piano, drums, electric guitar, etc. This gives the song a more lighthearted but meaningful tone.
“It’s just really encouraging and hope-filled,” Rickeard said.
Matt Papa is an American singer-songwriter who has written many modern Christian albums and singles. Matt Boswell is a pastor at Trails Church in Celina, Texas, who writes hymns as a hobby and has two released albums of his own.
Together Matt Papa and Matt Boswell have collaborated to make multiple albums, including “His Mercy Is More” in 2019 and “Almost Home” in 2021. Their latest album, “Our God Will Go Before Us,” was released in March of this year with “Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor” on it. This album also included multiple collaborations with other artists as well.
