Biology and forensics science teacher Melissa Beaulieu is currently listening to “I Can Never Say Goodbye” by The Cure.
“It sounds like their old stuff,” Beaulieu said. “Yeah, so it sounds very ‘90s Cure.”
This song was written for the death of Robert Smith’s brother Richard Smith. The lyrics explore grief and loss as Smith faces the death of his brother. As Robert sings, his voice carries feelings of melancholy and desperation.
While the melancholic beat of this song is similar to previous songs by The Cure, these lyrics hold more personal meaning to the band’s lead singer. The lyrics dive into the suddenness of Smith’s loss, with lyrics that convey a sense of feeling robbed, “Something wicked this way comes / To steal away my brother’s life.”
“That’s the way I liked it,” Beaulieu said. “Takes me back to my college days.”
Beaulieu enjoyed listening to The Cure back when she was in college, and songs that are similar to The Cure’s older music remind her of those times.
“I Can Never Say Goodbye” originally debuted during The Cure’s October 2022 concert. It was later officially released on November 1, 2024, on The Cure’s new album “Songs Of A Lost World.” The new album has taken the top spot on Amazon’s best-selling CDs and vinyl charts.
The Cure received a Viewer’s Choice MTV Video Music Award for “Friday In Love” in 1992.
