Sophomore Lexi Sheffey-Masten has recently been listening to “Smaller Acts” by Zach Bryan.
“It’s one of my friend’s favorite songs, and we were listening to it on the golf cart,” Sheffey-Masten said. “I really liked it, so I started listening to it on my own.”
The song “Smaller Acts,” from the album “Zach Bryan,” is a country-folk song.
The album tells a story about the grief that comes with losing a loved one. “Smaller Acts” exemplifies this well, while it explores the theme of genuine love and the appreciation for simplicity rather than grand gestures.
“I tend to listen to [Smaller Acts] when I’m driving around,” Sheffey-Masten said. “I’ve always listened to country music growing up, because it’s what my mom always played.”
Zach Bryan sings, “All the money in the world couldn’t make her smile/ She prefers things that are worthwhile.” In these lyrics, Bryan really shows the theme of love for genuine and simple things.
Money does not last forever and it certainly does not give us the memories that love can. Simple home-made things last forever in our memory and make us more appreciative.
The album “Zach Bryan” was nominated for a Grammy Award as the best country album. Another song on the album was also nominated for the best country song and best country duo/group performance. The entire album has 16 songs with “Smaller Acts” being the second to last on the album.
“Songs similar to this are ‘Ticking’ and ‘Holy Roller’,” Sheffey-Masten said.
