“Mi Gente”
Unlike a lot of Starr’s Mill students senior Julissa Sanchez’s favorite song does not fall into the categories of rap, pop, or country. Sanchez’s favorite song right now is “Mi Gente” by J Balvin and Willy William.
“Most of [Balvin’s] music is upbeat and catchy, and it will be stuck in your head throughout the whole day,” Sanchez said.
Released in 2017, Sanchez describes this single as a “pretty upbeat” song. Although it has been out for two years, “Mi Gente” did not reach its peak of popularity in the United States until a few months later when Beyoncé collabed for the remix.
The fact Sanchez found out about this song on the radio, proves that the radio is a fantastic way to hear different languages.
“It’s of another culture, it helps represents the different Spanish music, and it’s a bop,” Sanchez said. “Plus, it’s kind of different from what you normally hear.”
Beside being in her favorite genre of music, Reggeaton, another reason why Sanchez loves “Mi Gente” is the message that the song puts out.
The theme is like these are my people, we’re happy together,” Sanchez said. “I respect that.”
As the seasons change, “Mi Gente” provides an opportunity for students to change what’s playing on their devices.
