Review: The Reverie Tour

Ben Platt is on tour for his new album, “Reviere,” accompanied by the duo Aly & Aj. Platt had an amazing musical-like performance, but what truly stole the show was Aly & Aj’s opening act.

This past month Ben Platt played at the Fox Theatre as part of his Reverie tour. The show featured songs from his new album, past hits, and a few musical theatre songs.

The show started off with a fantastic performance by the duo Aly & Aj, most commonly known for their song “Future Breakup Song.” If you are like me and grew up listening to them on Disney Channel, or even watched some of their more recent projects, then you know that both girls are incredibly talented.

While Platt tapped into his theatre roots for his portion of the show, Aly & Aj kept it relaxed and traditional, along with both girls rocking the acoustic guitar. For me, this traditional style was more appealing, and I enjoyed the authentic vibe given off by the girls more than the feeling that I was watching a musical that Platt had.

Do not get me wrong, Platt did an amazing job by displaying creative lighting effects and making the show seem personal to his audience. I thoroughly enjoyed the emotional appeal of his new music. I also loved how he talked to the audience like they were his close friends.

My favorite part of the show was when he decided to do not one but two musical theatre songs from roles he would not traditionally be able to play since they are female roles. These songs came from the shows “Waitress” and “Wicked.”

All in all, while I did enjoy the opening act slightly more, the entire show is definitely worth going to see.
