Genre-blending artist Anderson .Paak released his fifth album “Ventura” in April. This album is a continuation of the upbeat, soulful style that he had perfected through his first four albums, reflective of the approaching joy summer will bring.

With spring finally kicking in and school nearing its end, the feeling of summer is looming over our heads. With this feeling comes a bunch of great music releases that are perfect for the end of school and start of summer break.

April music gives us a glimpse of what 2019’s prime has to offer the music world. From upbeat music perfect for a summer’s day to slow melancholic music great for a warm summer night, April has no doubt been one of the best music release months of the year.

“ARIZONA BABY” – Kevin Abstract

At the end of April, Brockhampton founding member Kevin Abstract released his second album, “ARIZONA BABY.” While the rapper has been a member of the rap boy band Brockhampton since its start in 2015, he has been also releasing music on his own for around the same time.

With this newest album, Abstract continues to combine the best parts of rap music and R&B much like he did with his previous album “American Boyfriend.” Abstract creates beautiful songs with amazing introspective lyrics. This newest album “ARIZONA BABY” is no different. While it is sad at times, the ability to put hardships into song makes for a great album.

While all of the songs on the album are amazing and unique in their own way, the stand-out songs are the sad ones “Peach,” “Georgia,” and “Corpus Christi.” These songs have a much slower and sadder pace than some of the other ones.

While many of the songs are very sad and slow, he uses the Brockhampton style of more upbeat, happier music with the song “Boyer.” Though Kevin Abstract’s music is much more melancholic than his music groups’, this newest album shows Abstract’s true talent that he can make it on his own.

“Where Polly People Go to Read” – Gus Dapperton

On April 19, new wave indie artist Gus Dapperton released his debut album “Where Polly People Go to read.” Since his start in early 2016, Dapperton has attracted a certain niche of fans with his alternative style of music. With a psychedelic beat and nasally vocals, his music is certainly a genre of its own. He has released nine singles since 2016 before finally releasing this album.

This album follows the same style as all of his previous music. The synth keyboard and spaced-out sounds are similar to a lot of other indie music such as Tame Impala or Toro y Moi. However, the thing that separates Dapperton from the rest is his unique vocals. The nasally singing with the reverb gives him his own sound.

The ten-song album does, however, feature many of the songs that Dapperton has released previously. Stand out originals are the slower “Verdigris” and “Coax & Botany,” and the more upbeat ”Sockboy.”

While Dapperton has not had mainstream success as other indie artists, his original style of music in this newest album is worth a listen.

“Ventura” – Anderson .Paak

On April 12, hip-hop, R&B, and soul singer Anderson .Paak released his fifth album, “Ventura.” Anderson .Paak, much like the other artists on this list, is an amazing musician who has not gained the commercial success he deserves. With live instruments and no electronic beats, his music is very pleasing to listen to, as it has a jazz feel with an R&B, soul vibe and just a touch of hip hop. The combination of all these genres creates music that is pleasing to the ear.

This album is very similar to his previous albums, however no one is complaining as this one is another Anderson .Paak classic. The overall flow of the album from start to finish is spectacular. The album goes from upbeat rap to mellow R&B very smoothly.

The whole album all the way through is worth a listen as Anderson .Paak’s charisma, charm, and songwriting skills are off the charts. However the songs that stand out are the upbeat “King James,” and “Come Home,” as well as the R&B songs “Make It Better” and “Reachin’ 2 Much.”

While there has been a slow start for music this year, musical quality has truly come around this month. These releases capture the happiness and warmth that we should all be feeling as we come closer and closer to summer. Though many have never heard of these artists, you surely don’t want to miss out on their newest works.
