English teacher Dr. Bonnie Standford recently watched the movie “American Fiction.”
The film, released in December 2023, is based off of an original award-winning novel by Percival that demonstrates the struggles and stereotypes of Black people.
In order to establish his way of thinking, protagonist Monk Ellison published a book unleashing the dangers and biases that are rooted in society while using a pen name. Along with the comical attribute, this movie took television by storm, making it an award-winning movie as well.
What did you enjoy about this film/series?
“The movie is based on a book that I read that was really good,” Stanford said. “I think it tells a story that’s extremely important that hasn’t been told. That’s what makes it good.”
What motivated you to watch this film/series?
“Well, I read the book and I really like the author,” Stanford said. “I’m actually about to read a different book by the same author called ‘James’.”
What was the most memorable part of this film/series?
“I think, without spoilers, the intro and beginning make you think a lot,” Stanford said.
What other films similar to this would you recommend?
”See that’s hard because it’s not much like it,” Stanford said. “That’s what makes it so good.”
