Junior Amiya Talley recently watched “10 things I hate about you.” It is a romantic comedy that was released in 1999. The film is a modern representation of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” It follows two high schoolers, Kat and Patrick, whose relationship starts as a scheme but turns into something real. The movie explores themes of love and trust.
What did you enjoy about this film/series?
“I watched it because the title makes you think it’s all about hate, but then they actually grow to love each other,” Talley said. “They build a strong bond, which makes it a really lovable movie.”
What motivated you to watch this film/series?
“My mom told me for years that I should watch it, and I always thought it wasn’t my type of movie,” Talley said. “But I finally watched it—and I actually loved it.”
What was the most memorable part of this film/series?
“It was when Kat was reading a poem about all the reasons she ‘hated’ Patrick, but really, she couldn’t hate him because she had fallen in love with him,” Talley said.
How is this film/series different from others that you have watched?
“It’s different because it starts with this guy getting paid to date a girl, but then he actually falls for her,” Talley said. “I don’t really see a lot of movies like that.”
What other films similar to this one would you recommend?
“I would say ‘Never Been Kissed.’ It’s also on Disney+, and it’s really good,” Talley said.
