Senior Alex Mann recently watched “The Last Samurai.”
“The Last Samurai” follows Captain Nathan Algren, an American military officer, hired to train Japanese forces in modern warfare. As the Japanese government attempts to erase the ancient Samurai class for more modern, Western trade–friendly policies, Algren finds himself being affected by the Samurai which places him at the center of two eras.
“The Last Samurai” was produced by Warner Bros. in 2003 and was directed by Edward Zwick who also directed “Glory’” and “Legends of the Fall.”
What did you enjoy about this film/series?
“I really enjoyed how cultural and enriching it was,” Mann said. “It was just super well–done.”
What motivated you to watch this film/series?
“My dad really liked it, so I thought I would give it a shot,” Mann said
What was the most memorable part of this film/series?
“The final battle between the Imperial troops and Samurai was pretty cool,” Mann said. “Probably one of my favorite battle scenes I’ve ever watched.”
How is this film/series different from others that you have watched?
“It shows the history of Japan and how they were like after the US Civil War,” Mann said.
What other films similar to this one would you recommend?
“‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ also has that really cool, historical Japanese vibe,” Mann said. “It’s also incredibly well–done.”
