One of science teacher John Sexton’s favorite films is the Netflix documentary “Fantastic Fungi.”
The film is a time-lapse journey about the world of fungi.
Directed by Louie Schwartzbrrg and narrated by Brie Larson, the film was released in early October of 2019.
What did you enjoy about this film/series?
“I love mushrooms and fungi, and I think they’re so interesting because their nature is to recycle for us,” Sexton said. “So while plants are growing and living beautifully, the fungi are doing the behind the scenes work. I think it’s really interesting how they were able to explain that.”
What motivated you to watch this film/series?
“Fungi has always been interesting to me,” Sexton said. “It popped up on my Netflix recommendation and I was like ‘I’ve got to watch this’.”
What was the most memorable part of this film/series?
“When they were talking about nature’s largest organisms,” Sexton said. “There’s a fungus that covers several or several hundred acres, in the sense that the life or the fungus itself is widespread enough over a huge amount of terrain even if it doesn’t pop up on the surface everyday. It’s so cool.”
How is this film/series different from others that you have watched?
“It was nice that it was directly informative,” Sexton said. “While I enjoy watching fiction, it was nice to know what I was being told was the truth.”
What other films similar to this one would you recommend?
“I think Netflix also has one about plants,” Sexton said. “I haven’t been recommended anything else about fungi, but I think there’s one about plants as well that is very interesting.”
“Fantastic Fungi” is available to watch on Netflix.
