Senior Devin Jarand is currently reading “Babel” by R.F Kuang.
“It’s a spin on dystopia,” Jarand said. “It shows the importance of words, with the characters having to unlock powers with words.”
The book follows a diverse cast of characters in an alternative Britain that uses magic to maintain a stable economy and a strong military. As the characters interact with the world, they begin seeing the cracks in the foundation of their society and begin to rebel against the systems put in place, sparking a revolution against the Oxford College, the group in power.
R.F Kuang is a Chinese-American author who specializes in writing alternative history novels. Her first book, “The Poppy Wars,” released in 2018 and discussed politics of 20th century China. Her novels blend fantasy with political commentary.
“I would definitely recommend books like the ‘Hunger Games’ if you enjoy this one,” Jarand said. “Although it is a little less destructive than that book.”
