History teacher and wrestling coach John Steiner is currently reading “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens.
“I like how descriptive Charles Dickens is when he writes,” Steiner said.
The novel is set in 1775 and follows the life of Charles Darnay. Darnay marries Lucie Manette, daughter of Dr. Manette. Dr. Manette has been imprisoned in Paris for the last 18 years. Later in the novel, Darnay gets accused of a terrible crime and is sentenced to death. The novel portrays the struggles that came with social uprising from the French Revolution.
“[Charles Dickens] is one of my favorite authors,” Steiner said.
Born in 1812, Charles Dickens is a famous British author. Dickens wrote a total of 15 novels, with the first being “Pickwick Papers” published in 1836. Dickens is best known for stories such as “A Christmas Carol” and “Oliver Twist.”
“This would be a good read for ninth and tenth grade students,” Steiner said. “This book goes into detail about the French Revolution, which is a part of the curriculum for sophomores.”
The overarching theme in “A Tale of Two Cities” is social justice.
