The drama program is performing “9 to 5” for this year’s One Act competition.
“I’m excited, I’m really excited, I think we have the opportunity to do really well,” lead actress Mia Morrow said.
One Act is a regional competition for Georgia high school drama programs. One Act tests the ability to perform great under certain protocols.
Before region, director Lauren Kuykendall wants to clean up lines and transitions, in order to make it under the 55-minute deadline.
“I do [feel confident going into the competition],” Kuykendall said. “I think we have a solid show and the students have worked really hard, both technically and on stage performing, so I feel really good about it.”
“9 to 5” is a story about three female employees who decide to get revenge on their sexist, tyrannical boss. Their hatred leads them to almost poisoning their boss, but when that fails they kidnap him.
Starr’s Mill performed “Once” last year and placed 2nd in region. Although they lost many seniors last year, the drama program put on a great show last weekend in advance of this week’s region competition at Troup County High School.
“Our biggest note last year was being able to find the story and bring light to the context, rather than focusing on music and dance as much,” Kuykendall said. “Spotlight on the story is really important.”
“9 to 5” will hold one more public performance prior to the region competition on October 26. The public performance begins at 6 p.m. tonight. Admission is free.
