Fashion lacking as celebrities return to Golden Globes

After a year off, the Golden Globes is back! Stars like Rihanna and Evan Peters walked the red carpet alongside other celebrities. As usual, there were many fashion hits, but also some obvious misses.

Tuesday night the 80th Golden Globes was held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. After last year’s hiatus, the red carpet was filled with hits and many misses.

As far as my favorite looks of the night, let’s start with internet personality Liza Koshy, who hit the red carpet wearing a lingerie-inspired dress by Morphew Atelier. This was a classy yet alluring look for the Golden Globes with Victorian-inspired beading. My favorite part of this look that pulled it together was the layered beaded choker. This was definitely one of the best looks I have seen on Koshy.

Disney Channel legend Selena Gomez wore a black and purple Valentino gown. Gomez has been elevating her style by moving toward the mature women route and it is working. The velvet dark purple dress, classic with the lighter purple sleeves giving it a pop of color, made Selena stand out in the best way possible.

Rihanna showed up fashionably late to the Golden Globes with A$ap Rocky, wearing a fully black velvet custom Schiaparelli gown designed by Daniel Roseberry. Once again she won best dressed without even being on time. This dress was similar to Selena Gomez’s look with the puffed sleeves, except the dress was cinched and had ruching. Generally, I do not like this look, but it looked incredible on this dress. In my mind, Rihanna can wear a trash bag and still look great.

My last hit for the Golden Globes red carpet was “Where The Crawdads Sing” actress Daisy Edgar-Jones who showed up in an incredible black Gucci mermaid dress. The top part of the dress was similar to Liza Koshy’s dress with the lingerie look, but this one gave her body a more fitted look. Edgar-Jones made this dress stick out with the ruffled mermaid skirt at the end and I think it was second only to Rihanna. It was unlike anything I had seen before and the first red carpet look I have seen on her.

Lily James usually impresses me on the red carpet but not last night. She came in a boring, poofy red Atelier Versace gown. It reminded me of a comforter… the comfy kind. This dress did not favor her body, which we have previously seen before in great dresses. The way the dress was scrunched just made it seem messy and wrinkly at that. Thank goodness the red carpet was not actually red this time.

Although Heidi Klum is the queen of Halloween, she was not the queen of the red carpet last night. I felt like she forgot she can actually look good, and not tacky, on the carpet. Klum wore a short silver dress with a purple boa attached to it. This was definitely not meant for the Golden Globes, or anywhere for that matter. I guess it is fine to look like that when you are not nominated for anything.

Men on the red carpet disappoint me every time and it was no different with Evan Peters who barely attends red carpets but showed up last night due to his nomination for the Netflix show “Dahmer.” There is not much more to say than it was boring. He wore a black suit. There is nothing more I can say.

Overall, last night’s red carpet was boring. Nothing totally stood out to me to make me think of it while I drifted to sleep. Celebrities and their stylists tried, and that is all I can say for the Golden Globes 2023.
