When our country was created on July 4, 1776, our Founding Fathers dreamed of a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
It seems that the simple philosophy that has been the core of our government for 237 years, but it seems to have been forgotten by our current leaders in Congress.
Politics now in Washington, D.C., has become so bitter and partisan that bills that should be easily passed through the House of Representatives and Senate are struck down because of which party the author belongs to.
A prime example of this is the bipartisan background gun background check bill that was authored by Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa.
The bill fell six votes short of the required 60 votes needed to send the bill to the House.
Opponents of the bill said that the new and more rigorous background checks would impose a burden on people who want to buy and sell guns. Also, they claim that the new background checks wouldn’t have prevented the Newtown shooting and would not stop future criminals.
Where the critics go wrong is that it would indeed stop shootings in our country by keeping firearms out of the hands of most criminals and mentally unstable individuals.
Even if this legislation wouldn’t stop every single evil person from getting weapons, it is better than nothing.
Also, would more tougher background checks really be a burden to those wishing to purchase a gun? Worst case scenario, they have to wait an extra day or two.
Saying that tougher background checks are a burden on Americans is like saying it is a burden to have a prescription for a drug. Regulations and rules like these are in place to keep society safe.
The death of this bill that 90 percent of Americans supported, shows the clearly partisan politics that is being carried out every single day in the capital.
It is time for our leaders to do what is right and vote for legislation that is good for the We the People.
