The 24-25 Prowler staff poses for a photo in the rotunda. The Prowler provides an experience that few classes do, true creative freedom.
The Starr’s Mill newspaper program, The Prowler is looking for new staff writers for the 25-26 school year.
Journalism provides an experience that few other courses provide. The course is designed in a way to allow creative expression to be let free, not confined to a specific subject matter like most other classes are. If you want to write about an issue you see at school or the community, a movie you saw, or simply something going on in the news, this is an outlet for all of those ideas.
Do not ignore the front row seats you get to most school events. From football games to pep rallies, the Prowler reports on it all!
Not into writing? No worries. The Prowler also does multimedia projects as well, including video projects, sports interviews, photos, podcasts. All you have to do is make the leap and branch out. Trying new things is a constant in this class and makes it all the more enjoyable.
However, the content is not the best part of this class. The best part of this class is the connections you make through it. Nothing feels better than having a coach stop you in the hall to ask you if you are reporting on that night’s game or a teacher telling you that they read your story. Building those relationships is what makes journalism so special.
It does not even stop at school staff but your fellow staff members. Working with photographers, asking editors for advice with a story, or just being curious on what is being done by your classmate, it leads to strong friendships. The community built within the course of a school year makes this class special.
There is a learning curve in the beginning. It also gets frustrating if you do not recognize your deadlines are approaching. But in the end, it is worth a try. Expand your horizons.
With all that said, please give journalism a chance. Stop by room 703 to ask advisor Justin Spencer for more information.
