The annual One Act Play competition took place on November 9 at Harris County where Starr’s Mill won the region title for “The Anatomy of Gray.”
This is the first time in three years that Starr’s Mill has won the region title in One Act. Under the leadership of new drama teacher Heather Jernigan, cast and crew will compete at the state competition on November 23 hosted at Alexander High School.
“We did a lot of in depth research. I studied the dialect of the time period, the students came up with family groups, where they were born, what their life was like,” Jernigan said. “Things like that that really helped the students connect with the characters that helped us achieve the overall win.”
Along with earning the region championship, the group also won several individual awards based off of their performances: All-Star Case awarded to senior Addison Bowers and sophomore Allie Kemp, Best Supporting Actor awarded to freshman Liam Bell, Best Actress awarded to sophomore Kimberly Greene, Best Actor awarded to junior Seth Manuel.
“Our job as set designers is to create the environment of the show,” technical director senior Evan Fish said. “It’s all just very old-looking stuff, nothing new and shiny or modern. It all really does look like it’s, you know, this old town.”
Following state, the Starr’s Mill drama department will shift focus to their next production, “The Little Mermaid.” Students interested in auditioning can visit Jernigan’s room November 18 from 4-8 p.m.
