PBIS has announced April’s Staff Member of the Month and Students of the Month.
Athletics secretary Sarah Harmond and Office of Student Success secretary Stacy Nichols nominated assistant principals secretary Heather Smith for her responsibility and accountability, especially when organizing events.
“I sit next to her every day, and I see how diligently she works,” Harmond said. “She inspires me to be diligent in my job and to be kind, respectful, and helping to other people.”
Other staff members nominated included Spanish teacher Marcela Sample, science teacher Amy Hinote, varsity track head coach Chad Walker, English teacher Chris Salas, nurse Jenna Lawlor, and childcare teacher Hope Via.
English teacher Justin Spencer nominated junior Micah Freeman for his responsibility. Freeman shows his responsibility through his leadership and actions as an editor-in-chief for the school newspaper.
“As editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, The Prowler, Micah has really stepped into that role his junior year,” Spencer said. “He is not just a leader by name, but a leader in actions. Being a great leader in the simple actions, and just holding himself and his peers accountable to that is quite an admirable trait.”
Other nominated upperclassmen included senior Badriya Hampton.
Special Education teacher Juliana Wright nominated freshman Wisdom Potter for her respectful attitude in the classroom. Potter is a kind and compassionate student who is patient with her peers. She is willing to listen, to encourage, and to assist other students with classroom activities and sets a good example for others.
“Wisdom is a compassionate and intuitive young lady,” Wright said. “[She] is always willing to help others.”
Other underclassmen nominees included freshmen Christian Kohl and Brooke Kalen.
Once a month Elise Heaton, the assistant principal in charge of PBIS, sends out a link to the staff so that they can nominate teachers and students on their good mannerism. The PBIS committee, composed of Heaton, a PBIS coach, and other staff, voted on the PBIS staff and student of the month.
“The PBIS program at Starr’s Mill helps us focus on the three core values that we want all of our students and staff to exhibit on a daily basis: respect, accountability, and responsibility,” assistant principal Elise Heaton. “So with PBIS and focusing on these three things we can celebrate the positive things going on in our building instead of the negative things, which will hopefully encourage others to show those positive values as well.”
