Last week, Starr’s Mill choir participated in the Georgia Large Group Performance Evaluation. The Treble and Freshman choir went on Tuesday, and the Chanticleer choir went on Wednesday.
All three choirs earned a score of 1 out of 5 overall, and 1s in each individual category while performing music in Class B. Judges score choir performances on tone, pitch, rhythm, diction, interpretation, and other factors. 1 is considered superior, and 5 is considered poor.
“LGPE gives us the opportunity to receive scores and comments from a panel of esteemed judges,” choral director Dr. Kellie Clark said. “The event is valuable in that it allows us to share our progress and to think about ways we can improve moving forward.“
LGPE is an annual Georgia Music Educators Association sanctioned performance. All high school and middle school fine arts groups, including chorus, band, and orchestra, are able to participate in LGPE. The ranking is different for each type of ensemble.
Choral ensembles perform in Class A, B, C, or D with A being the most advanced. Band and orchestra enter in levels 1-6 with 6 being the most difficult. The conductors and directors of each ensemble are responsible for choosing the music and level for their group to perform.
Bella Voce (treble choir) performed “Domine Deus” from Mass in G by J.S. Bach and “Wayfaring Stranger” arranged by Robert DeCormier. Chanticleer (mixed choir) performed “Sing Praises” by Lloyd Pfautsch and “No Time” by Susan LaBarr.
“I think we did really well,” senior Dee Bacigalupo said. “Our sight reading went okay, but I think we could’ve done better on that. Our singing was pretty easy, because we were experienced with those pieces.”
Starr’s Mill band also performed at LGPE, and earned 1s overall. Orchestra performs today.
