PBIS has announced its Student of the Month and Staff Member of the Month recipients for the month of February.
Math teacher Heather McNally nominated fellow math teacher Dr. Nicholas Castagna because he helped out a Starr’s Mill student during an incident by making sure that the paramedics got there fast and on time and that the student was safely reunited with his family.
“He lept into action and just did an excellent job when one of our students had a medical emergency at soccer practice,” McNally said.
Other staff members nominated include learning specialist Luke Hearn, English teachers Brandon Kendall and Chris Salas, math teachers Tony Kluemper, sign language interpreter Julie Karneboge, LEA Amy Evert, paraprofessional Allison Tumblin, French teacher Jill Snelgrove, and Spanish teacher Amber Boyd.
Math teacher Julie Spencer nominated junior Gavin Vu because he helped a student during soccer practice and stayed with him until paramedics arrived. He also communicated with the student’s family to keep them informed.
“I nominated Gavin for his responsibility. A student was in distress and Gavin sought help while being there for the student in need,” Spencer said. “I believe Gavin’s actions were commendable and he should be recognized for his actions.”
Other upperclassmen nominated include seniors Madison Clayton, Zoe Croft, Hope Delaney, Rasheed Harper, Heaven Johnson, Emilio Meza Ortiz, Mitchell Sellers, and Bo Walker, and juniors Ansiba Bakaly and Luke Nuscher.
Math teacher Heather McNally also nominated freshman Alexandra Bowe because she makes sure she knows what the lessons in math class are about.
“She’s awesome, she is very conscientious, she works very, very hard in class, she asks questions, and she takes everything really seriously,” McNally said. “She’s just a lot of fun to teach and has a great personality.”
Other underclassmen nominated include sophomores Tessa Brown, Cara King, and Aidan Muschamp, and freshman Isaiah Gadsden.
Once a month Elise Heaton, the assistant principal in charge of PBIS, sends out a link for staff members to nominate students and teachers on their good behavior. The PBIS committee, composed of Heaton, a PBIS coach, and other faculty and staff, voted on the PBIS staff and students of the month.
“The PBIS program at Starr’s Mill helps us focus on the three core values that we want all of our students and staff to exhibit on a daily basis: respect, accountability, and responsibility,” assistant principal Elise Heaton. “So with PBIS and focusing on these three things we can celebrate the positive things going on in our building instead of the negative things, which will hopefully encourage others to show those positive values as well.”
