Senior Rush Maples has been selected as the Starr’s Mill 2024 STAR student. He earned the honor with a SAT score of 1580. He chose chemistry teacher Christie Leanza as this year’s STAR teacher.

“[Rush Maples’] work ethic goes above and beyond what I’ve seen from high school students,” Leanza said. “Not only his work ethic, but his natural talent and ability.”

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program celebrates Georgia high school seniors who have the highest achievement and teachers of their choice who were the most influential in their achievement.

To qualify as a STAR student, a senior must have the highest SAT score in one sitting that is either equal to or higher than the average scores, as well as be in the top 10 of his or her graduating class by the end of junior year.

Maples took AP chemistry taught by Christie Leanza last year.

“I really enjoyed Mrs. Leanza’s class,” Maples said. “It was the hardest class I ever took, and I don’t think I would have made it through without her.”

According to Leanza, Maples is overall a brilliant and gifted student who is dedicated to his work.

“He would come in, sit down, and be ready,” Leanza said. “He’s just a really serious student and developed the skills he needs to be successful.”

Maples will now represent Starr’s Mill to compete for Fayette County STAR student. Whoever wins at county will represent the entire county and compete at the regional level.
