The Starr’s Mill math team won this year’s annual Griffin RESA division two trophy. “[The atmosphere] was pretty relaxed,” senior Elena Wernecke said. “All the teams were just hanging out and laughing before it started.”

The Starr’s Mill math team recently won the Division Two trophy at the annual Griffin Regional Educational Service Agency High School Math Competition.

Starr’s Mill is part of the Griffin RESA region, which includes Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding, and Upson counties. The competition is broken down further into three categories based on school enrollment.

The Starr’s Mill team consisted of seniors Michael Haynes, Elena Wernecke, and Carter Rezac, junior Ian Fertig, and sophomore Kyle Robinson, who completed an individual written test. After finishing the written portion of the competition, four of the five students on the team moved on to the ciphering round. Teams are judged on the top four scores from the written portion and the team score from the ciphering round.

“We have [won this competition] before,” math team coach J.B. Campbell said. “Our superintendent and math curriculum coordinator really encourage us to take our teams to this competition because it’s so well publicized within the educational community.”

The math team is not yet scheduled to compete in another state qualifying tournament after they already competed at state qualifiers at Luella High School and Kennesaw State University.
