When U.S. History teacher Charlotte Robinson found out she was nominated for the Outstanding Teacher of American History Award presented by the Fayette Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was more than surprised. “I really had no clue that I was nominated, or that there was such an award,” Robinson said.
Robinson was nominated in the fall by Becky Ryckeley, the Fayette County Coordinator of Social Studies and Gifted Programs, who is also a former social studies teacher. “Mrs. Robinson brings so much passion and knowledge to the study of American History,” Ryckeley said. “She has a strong commitment to teaching and fostering deep historical understanding in her students.” Robinson’s teaching methods fit right into the DAR’s purpose of preserving American history, prompting Ryckeley to nominate her.
After Robinson received the nomination in the fall, she submitted her resume to be further considered for the award. “It was after Christmas when I received word that I had actually won,” Robinson said.
The Fayette County DAR chapter presented the award and a $100 check to Robinson during one of their monthly meetings at the Peachtree City Library on Monday, Feb. 10. “They had a little award ceremony set up just to give me my award,” Robinson said. “It certainly made me feel special.”
