Junior Mynah Holloway remembered her mother always telling her “you can do anything you set your mind to” when she found out she was elected the Beta Club state secretary.
“In a completely non-arrogant way, I’m proud of myself. I set out to do something and I got it done,” said Holloway, who has been a Beta Club member since the sixth grade.
Already familiar with the traditions and the responsibilities of Beta Club, Holloway, known as M. Jaye to her friends, was more than ready to seek the prestigious state position.
“The primary role of the state secretary is to coordinate and carry out annual Beta Club conventions,” said Kelly Rock, who is one of the two SMHS club sponsors.
Holloway’s duties include keeping track of the minutes from the monthly meetings and taking care of all club correspondence.
“Mynah shows lots of leadership potential,” said Rock, who is thrilled along with the other sponsor Kristin Peavyhouse to watch Holloway reach new heights.
Holloway not only had the perseverance to take on such a challenge, she also had the foresight to begin planning her campaign well before the March convention in Atlanta.
“I had to write a speech, design a T-shirt, make a poster board about me and come up with a skit,” Holloway said.
Twenty of the school’s Beta Club students who went to the convention in Atlanta acted as her support group by wearing the T-shirt she made and aiding her in networking the crowd of 1,000.
Now that Holloway has one title under her belt, she plans to run for the national secretary position at the convention in June in Mobile.
There, she will yet again experience the intensity of running for a position, but this time, it’s a little more intense. Holloway, along with Beta Club State President Robby Swindell and Vice President Louie Anaya, is already on the campaign trail. All three started writing their skits and speeches and creating their autobiographical poster boards and T-shirts.
“We need more Beta Club members to come along to the convention,” Holloway said. “Since we’ll be near the Gulf Coast, I know I’ll be asking to go to the beach.”
In the meantime, Holloway said she is waiting for the Thursday, May 2, school Beta Club meeting to find out if she will be its president during her senior year. Holloway is running against fellow junior Vivian Nguyen.
