Still euphoric over their wildly successful three-day run of the spring musical “Urinetown”, director David Spearman and his cast found out Tuesday that they were nominated for a whopping 14 Shuler Hensley Awards. That breaks last year’s record of 10 nominations for “Zombie Prom.”
The Shuler Hensley Awards is part of a program created to recognize excellence in high school musical theater. It was founded by Shuler Hensley, a graduate of The Westminster Schools who attended UGA. He is a well-respected actor/singer who has won numerous awards including a Tony, Outer Critics Circle, and a Drama Desk.
“Urinetown” is about a town struggling through a severe drought that has lasted 20 years, and the people are forced to ration water, which led to the outlawing of private restrooms. These strict laws created uprisings against the corrupt politicians and officials of the ‘Urine Good Company’ who controls the toilets.
The nominations are supporting actor, Ryan Bolt for his role as Officer Lockstock; supporting actress, Rebekah Livingston for her role as Penny Pennywise; featured performer, Ethan Gallagher for his role as Caldwell P. Cladwell; leading actor, Chase Thomaston for his role as Bobby Strong; and ensemble, the entire cast.
Spearman was nominated for the second year in a row for direction, which he won last year. Others nominees include orchestra for Dr. John Odom, choreography for Chase Thomaston and Antonela Kljajic, music direction for Zach Stutts and Christy Todd, and overall production for the entire “Urinetown” cast.
Also nominated are costume design, Ariel Louis, Selena Flowers, and Sarah Conklin; scenic design, Spearman; lighting design, Brent Bouthiller, Jessica Richey, and Agnes Debee; and technical execution, Brent Bouthiller.
Camille Edwards received an honorable mention for her leading actress role as Hope Cladwell.
