Over the course of a three-day Spirit Week in mid-September, students participated in a range of events from dress-up days to parades that culminated in the Friday night football game against Mt. Zion in Panther Stadium and the Homecoming Dance that followed in the school gym.
On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the first day of Spirit Week, students dressed up as their favorite characters ranging Red Solo Cups to Minions from Despicable Me. Thursday was Decades Day and students from each grade level dressed in attire from their “assigned” decade. Members of the freshmen class strolled through the halls in 1950s clothing complete with poodle skirts for the girls and greaser jackets for the guys. Sophomores wore 1960’s style hippie clothes complete with headbands and lots of flowers and peace signs. The junior class stood out in their bright tie-dye shirts from the 1970s. Seniors class donned their best and brightest windbreakers with matching sweat bands, colorful leggings, and warm-up suits to complete their ’80s look.
After school on Thursday, the nominees to the Homecoming Court participated in the annual Homecoming Parade. A variety of school clubs, organizations and sports teams also participated by designing floats and throwing candy from a variety of convertibles, trucks, golf carts or on foot to the eager crowds who lined the parade route from Braelinn Elementary on Robinson Road to the student parking lot at the high school, about three miles away. They were led by members of the Starr’s Mill Panther Pride Marching Band and varsity football cheerleaders.
On Friday, the underclassmen dressed in an assortment of spirit wear while the seniors continued the tradition of wearing Greek togas. That night, the Panthers defeated the Mt. Zion Bulldogs 49-22, and about 400 students celebrated by attending the club-themed Homecoming Dance.
