Band director Scott King is December’s recipient of the Golden Apple award. He was selected by November’s recipient Amber Boyd.
“Mr. King is a wonderful band director and colleague,” Boyd said. “I have a freshman this year in the program, and I have seen all his hard work and countless hours that he has put into the marching band and band program.”
King believes that music can allow students to learn valuable life lessons and skills that they may not be able to learn through other classes.
“I want all of us to have fun playing music and for this class to be a divergence from other classes,” King said. “I want the students to learn many life skills, and music is the vehicle to teaching them those life skills.”
King graduated with his undergraduate degree from Jacksonville State University, his master’s degree from Vandercook University, and his education specialist degree from Auburn University. He has worked at Starr’s Mill for 22 years.
“I love watching students develop musically but also as young adults,” King said. “If I were not teaching, I would not feel as connected [to the students].”
King spends most of the fall semester outside directing the marching band. When he has free time, he enjoys watching college football and spending time with his family.
King receives $100 from Farmers Insurance to spend on curriculum and instruction. He will also receive a free large pizza from Buck’s Pizza, a gift certificate to Lisa’s Creperie in Senoia, a goodie bag from Safelite Auto, and a free haircut from Main Hair in Peachtree City.
